Ford International Airport opens Aircraft Rescue & Firefighting facility

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Gerald R. Ford International Airport has opened an Aircraft Rescue & Firefighting facility adjacent to its recently opened Airport Operations Center.

The 25,000-square-foot building provides space for the rescue team and is part of the airport's emergency-response capabilities. It features larger bays for four advanced firefighting vehicles, expanded training space and specialized equipment, plus direct access to the Airport Operations Center.

The facility will also serve as a hub for training and supporting the airport's mutual aid partners.

The Airport Authority provided more information in a news release:

It was designed to enhance passenger safety and aircraft operations with specialized features, including:

  • Larger bays for four advanced firefighting vehicles.
  • Expanded training spaces and specialized equipment for ARFF personnel.
  • Direct access to the recently completed Airport Operations Center.

“Our team is thrilled to announce the opening of the ARFF building,” said Alex Peric, vice president and COO of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority. “As the Airport continues to grow and serve more travelers, we strive to maintain the highest level of safety and operations for our community.

“This significant investment will further support our efforts to respond swiftly and efficiently to any emergency situation that may arise, and we are grateful to our team and partners for making this possible.”

Located on the east side of the airfield, the ARFF building is adjacent to the Airport Operations Center to facilitate efficient communication and coordination between teams during emergency events. The facility will also serve as a hub for training and supporting the Ford International Airport’s mutual aid partners.

The project was funded through a combination of federal and state grants and general Airport revenues.

DLZ of Michigan served as the project architect, with Miller-Davis Company as the general contractor.
