GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- ICCF Community Homes announced an initiative Wednesday to develop 200 affordable homes in West Michigan over the next two to five years.
A Building With Faith campaign will help fund the effort to expand affordable housing in Kent County. The ICCF says the county faces a critical shortage of affordable housing, with more than 35,000 units needed to meet demand.
A $6-million lead gift was announced at a news conference. It will match every additional dollar donated up to the $12-million fundraising goal.
"We are at 84-percent of our goal, so we've raised $10 million to-date," said Michelle Covington, vice president of Advancement for the ICCF.
She added that the goal will be to fund construction of 200 affordable houses over the next two to five years.
"The need is so large that we don't have enough inventory to provide affordable housing in the city for families in need," Covington said.
