Thousands without power following late-night storm, storm damage reported

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - A major storm has thousands of Consumers Energy customers across the region without electricity this morning.

Consumers Energy says, statewide, more than 187,000 of its customers were without electricity as of 7 a.m.

"Over 500 crews will be at work," Consumers Energy spokesperson Brian Wheeler tells West Michigan's Morning News. "We're trying to find more resources everywhere we can."

Wheeler says that may include additional in-state and out-of-state crews.

Wheeler says some may not have their service restored until the weekend.

The National Weather Service will be sending out crews to investigate several possible tornadoes. Tornado warnings were posted for several counties and a possible tornado was seen on the ground in Allegan County.

Several schools were closed this morning due to a lack of power. A closure list can be found here.
