Young man involved in officer shootout now headed to prison

A young man involved in a shootout with police after fleeing a traffic stop is now headed to prison.

A judge sentenced Saul Rodriguez this week to between 34 months and 10 years for assault and intent to murder. Rodriguez will first serve two mandatory years for using a firearm whilst committing a felony.

The charges stem from a shootout with police that occurred in March 2024 following a traffic stop on South Division near Crofton Street. Rodriguez fled from the vehicle and was accused of firing multiple rounds while two officers chased him down Horton Avenue near Burton Street SE.

That's when officers returned fire, but no one was hit.
