John Ball Zoo considering space in Walker for aquarium

John Ball Zoo is considering cleaning up a site on the Grand River in Walker to build an aquarium.

CEO Peter D'Arienzo says they have been working on the concept for years and this property would give them the opportunity to highlight and elevate the wetlands.

The zoo is looking at a 190-acre site that includes the former Fenske Landfill off Wilson Avenue. The landfill site would need to be cleaned up but D'Arienzo says that is part of the zoo's mission as well.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lake and Energy confirmed they are in talks with the zoo about the land and a brownfield project for the cleanup.
