MDOT to host public meeting on MLK Street bridge reconstruction

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Michigan Department of Transportation will host a public meeting on June 25 to discuss plans for rebuilding the Martin Luther King Junior Street Bridge over US-131 in Grand Rapids.

MLK Jr. Street was formerly known as Franklin Street.

The state will invest $30 million to rebuild about 700 feet of the bridge from the northbound US-131 ramps eastward to the end of the bridge.

MDOT officials will provide project details, scheduling information and expected traffic impacts during the meeting. It will run from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Fire Department station at 115 Martin Luther King Jr. St. near Buchanan Avenue.

City representatives, local business owners and MDOT staff will participate.

MDOT said in a news release the public is invited to stop by anytime during the meeting to learn more about the project, provide comments and ask questions.

"Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely," Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said. "By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime. This year, let's build on our momentum to pass a bipartisan local road funding plan so we can keep fixing our damn roads and creating good-paying, local jobs."
