Investigation has revealed that the fire hydrants nearest to a recycling business that caught fire overnight in Grand Rapids were not functional.
This is cause for alarm as that type of business usually contains a fair number of flammable materials inside
The fire broke out around 10:45 p.m. last night at Clean Planet Recycling, which is located on Hall Street.
Fire Marshall Bill Smith said crews had to run hoses from several blocks away because the nearest ones weren't working.
The water department is investigating why the hydrants failed, and investigation into what caused the fire is still ongoing.
