GRFD: Third-party investigator looking into industrial fire

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Grand Rapids Fire Marshal Bill Smith says one firefighter sustained a minor injury after a fire broke out around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday.

It was in an industrial building on Hall Street west of Godfrey Avenue. Clean Planet Recycling and Shapiro Bag Company are housed in that facility.

Smith told WOOD Radio early Thursday afternoon that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. He said a third-party investigator was on the scene Thursday.

"The neat thing is the building is still standing. And, hopefully, within a few days they should be operating. We definitely made a difference in this fire and stopped it in the right place," Grand Rapids Fire Marshal Bill Smith said.

It took firefighters a few hours to put out the remaining hot spots and mop up afterward.

Clean Planet Recycling and Shapiro Bag Company are housed in that facility.
