MUSKEGON, Mich. -- Muskegon County Public Health and the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services are investigating a reported measles exposure on June 12.
WOOD-TV reported late Thursday afternoon it had received confirmation from public health officials about a positive measles case.
Earlier, the health department said the exposure occurred at the Cinema Carousel on Grand Haven Road in Muskegon between 5:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Health officials say if symptoms develop, stay at home and call your healthcare provider before seeking care. Measles is a contagious airborne disease that causes a rash, high fever, coughing, runny nose and red, watery eyes.
Here are more details from a Muskegon County Public Health news release:
People who were at the following location may have been exposed and should monitor for symptoms through July 3. If symptoms develop, stay home and call your healthcare provider before seeking care.
• Cinema Carousel, 4289 Grand Haven Rd, Muskegon, MI 49441, Thursday, June 12, 2025, between 5:30 pm and 10:30 pm
Measles is one of the most highly contagious airborne diseases and can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area. Measles infection causes a rash to appear, alongside a high fever, coughing, runny nose, and red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis). Symptoms usually appear 7 to 14 days after exposure, but they can take as long as 21 days.
“We know there are positive measles cases in Michigan, and we know we should proceed with caution,” said Kathy Moore, Health Officer for Muskegon County. “The risk of illness is always around us, and we each have a personal responsibility to be aware and protect our health.”
Safe and effective measles vaccines are widely available. Unvaccinated individuals should consult their healthcare provider to discuss the benefits and risks. Anyone unsure of their vaccination status can call 231-724-1220 for help from the health department.
Weekly updates on the status of measles in Michigan are available on the Michigan Measles Dashboard at MI.gov/measles.
