Suspect pleads not guilty-insanity after allegedly assaulting firefighter

A man accused of attacking a fire lieutenant in November is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.

Robert Joppe entered that plea in Kent County Circuit Court this week.

Joppe was accused of shoving his thumb into a Grand Rapids Township fire lieutenant's eye as he was seeking help at the station last fall.

The suspect will now undergo a psychiatric evaluation for up to 60 days before a determination is made.
