Kent Co. needs 34K new housing units by 2029

An updated housing study finds that Kent County needs to add 34,000 new units by 2029.

Housing Next conducted the study and found that the county's biggest need is for-sale units with around 22,000 needed. The county also needs around 12,000 rental units.

The city of Grand Rapids alone needs to add 13,000 units to address demand.

Housing Next consultant Ryan Kilpatrick says the population is growing at a rate of around 1 percent each year but household growth is outpacing that two to one.

Kilpatrick says the Baby Boomer generation is also healthier and wealthier than previous generations and many are aging in place instead of moving to a retirement community.
