Deputy Fire Chief Eric Freeman
The Grand Rapids Fire Department (GRFD) will be hosting a public retirement reception for Deputy Chief Eric Freeman.
The reception is in celebration of Freeman's extraordinary career, service and lasting legacy. Deputy Chief Freeman began his distinguished service with the GRFD on October 14, 1991. Over the course of more than three decades, he rose through the ranks, culminating in his historic appointment as the first African American deputy fire chief in the department’s history. Freeman was also instrumental in establishing the department’s first Fire Cadet Program – a groundbreaking initiative that provided inner-city youth with opportunities to explore careers in fire service, which was not easily accessible or known prior.
Fire Chief Brad Brown praised Freeman's vision and leadership throughout his time with GRFD, saying "We want to recognize and appreciate Deputy Chief Freeman for his incredible service and steadfast commitment to the community,” Brown said. “Eric’s presence, calm, caring demeanor and leadership will be profoundly missed by colleagues, friends and residents alike.”
The reception will take place on Monday, July 14, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Fire Station, which is located at 115 MLK St. SW. Current and former staff, community partners and members of the public alike are all invited to the event honoring Deputy Chief Freeman’s remarkable service and achievements.
