WALKER, Mich. -- Walker Fire Chief Russell Shoultz is urging residents to make sure they have working smoke detectors in their homes.
That advice comes after residents of a home on Cummings Avenue near O'Brien Road were nearly trapped Monday morning. Shoultz says there were no working smoke detectors when first responders arrived around 3:25 a.m.
The residents got out, but a cat died in the fire. The Walker Fire Department is launching a community-wide campaign to get everyone to check their smoke detectors. And it said in a news release that fire departments across the region are offering free smoke detector installation to residents as part of the initiative:
"No one should be without a working smoke detector,” said Chief Shoultz. “We’re urging our community to take this seriously. Don’t wait until it’s too late.” As a reminder to Walker residents, the Walker Fire Department will come and install smoke detectors in your home at no cost. Please call (616) 791-6840.
