Bill introduced to require cursive to be taught in Michigan schools

Democratic State Representative Brenda Carter of Pontiac, Michigan introduced a bill last month that would require cursive to be taught in all Michigan schools.

It was referred to the State House Committee on Education and Workforce. Carter says that she believes knowing cursive helps students to connect to historical culture.

If passed, the bill would require the Michigan Department of Education to develop a series of lesson plans for teaching how to read and write cursive script no later than June 1, 2027. It would be required to be taught starting with the 2027-28 school year.
