Westbound I-96 reopens in Lowell Township after critical-injury crash

LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Michigan State Police say the driver of a box truck was critically injured in a crash on I-96 in Lowell Township on Wednesday morning.

It happened around 11 a.m. in the westbound lanes approaching the Alden Nash Avenue exit.

State troopers say the box truck driver evidently was distracted by a motorcycle crash up ahead and didn't brake in time to avoid slamming into the back of a semi-truck that was slowing down. Police say the man was pinned inside the truck and had to be freed by a local fire department rescue team from the wreckage.

The westbound lanes of the freeway were shut down for a couple hours.

WOOD-TV reports AeroMed was summoned to the scene.
