Judge orders Schurr files to be destroyed

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Judge Christina Mims has signed an order to destroy former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr's arrest records.

Schurr had been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Patrick Lyoya in April 2022.

A jury deadlocked on that charge earlier this year and Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker opted to not try Schurr again.

The former officer's attorneys cited a state law that says records and data should be expunged or destroyed if the charges against a defendant are dismissed before trial.
