GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The 17th annual 5K Rhythm Run & Health Fair comes up Saturday at Ottawa Hills High School. It will run from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
"There's resources and there's fun, and there's music, and there's goodies and giveaways, and hugs and smiles," Ashlie Jones said on West Michigan's Morning News. She is the Health Initiatives & Community Engagement Manager for the Grand Rapids African American Health Institute.
Jones told WOOD Radio it is an exciting event.
"So, we definitely want the colors, and we want you to think outside of the box. Like, be super jazzy. Join us in being disruptors, but create fun," she said.
Jones added that they don't want to lose the focus, though, in knowing that the GRAAHI is a conduit of resources. And this event will provide the opportunity for people to advocate on behalf of someone else, especially when it comes to health and wellness challenges.
Grand Rapids-area NAACP President Cle Jackson said the health fair is a major resource.
"In terms of the work that Ashlie is doing and Vanessa Greene, the (GRAAHI) CEO, and their entire team in terms of just engaging community in the fun in a very celebratory way," he said.
