IONIA, Mich. -- Ionia County says the first human case of West Nile virus has been reported.
The Ionia County Health Department did not release further information about the individual who contracted the virus.
Most people who contract the virus do not experience any symptoms or feel mild flu-like symptoms. The illness can cause serious health complications and death in rare cases.
Health officials recommend taking precautions against mosquitoes when you are outside. Officials say wearing insect repellent, staying inside at dusk, wearing light-colored, long sleeves and removing standing water from your yard can reduce your risk of mosquito bites.
