John Ball Zoo Bids Farewell to Sammy and Sunny

The John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids has announced the loss of two cherished animals, Sammy the chimpanzee and Sunny the kelp gull. Sammy, who turned 47 in June, had been a resident of the zoo since 2009 after arriving from the Kansas City Zoo. Over recent years, Sammy faced chronic health issues, and his condition worsened significantly over the weekend, leading to the decision for humane euthanasia.

Sunny, a 42-year-old kelp gull, was also a beloved member of the zoo's family. Recently, he developed serious health problems that affected his movement and coordination. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, the zoo determined that euthanasia was the most compassionate option.

The zoo expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating that "Sammy’s gentle presence and Sunny’s remarkable spirit will be profoundly missed." Both animals had been integral parts of the zoo community, and their absence will be felt by staff and visitors alike.
