GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A semi-truck driver lost consciousness due to a medical issue and veered into oncoming traffic on Interstate 96 near Grand Rapids on Tuesday (October 14). The incident occurred when the truck was traveling eastbound and crossed the median barriers, eventually stopping on the embankment off the westbound shoulder of I-96. Fortunately, no other vehicles were hit during the incident.
According to the Michigan State Police, the driver, a 59-year-old man from Ira, Michigan, was taken to a hospital, though his current condition is unknown. The crash happened near Monroe Avenue on Grand Rapids’ north side, close to Northpark Presbyterian Church.
Police have not released the driver's name.
