GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- As part of the third annual "Operation Green Light" initiative, Kent County Veterans Services will be distributing 2,000 green light bulbs to help light the county green.
From November 4 through the 11, the agency is encouraging residents and businesses to swap out their outdoor lights for green bulbs to show support for military veterans.
The week-long observation will culminate with the United Veterans Council of Kent County's annual Veterans Day Parade on November 11 in downtown Grand Rapids.
That will begin at 6 p.m. at the corner of Lyon Street and Ottawa Avenue and end with a remembrance ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park.
Now in its third year, Operation Green Light is a nationwide initiative led by the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers.
Here are more details from a Kent County news release:
The parade will begin at Lyon Street NW & Ottawa Avenue NW, proceed along Monroe Avenue NW, turn left on Fulton Street W, and conclude with a ceremony of remembrance at Veterans Memorial Park.
If you are interested in helping KCVS as a volunteer for the parade, please email Daniel.Zar@kentcountymi.gov.
“Operation Green Light is a powerful, visible moment of unity, and its importance for our veterans cannot be overstated,” said Ryan Grams, Director of Kent County Veterans Services.
This campaign raises essential awareness about the unique challenges veterans face, from accessing benefits to mental health support, and shines a spotlight on the vital local resources available to them.
KCVS invites all government entities, organizations, residents, and businesses to join the effort! Beginning October 20, residents can pick up a free green light bulb, thanks to a generous donation from Consumers Energy, at the following locations:
- Any Kent District Library branch
- Any Grand Rapids Public Library branch
- Kent County Veterans Services, 836 Fuller Avenue NE (during normal business hours)
Light bulbs will be handed out on a first come, first served basis as supply is limited.
- Residents can also help spread the word by downloading and posting promotional posters and social media graphics, located at kentcountymi.gov/veterans.
"KDL is excited to partner with Kent County Veterans Services this year to help them distribute their Operation Green Light bulbs. We hope veterans will feel supported in their communities by people lighting up their house with a green light," said Craig Buno Community Engagement Manager, for Kent District Library.
"Consumers Energy is honored to support the Operation Green Light initiative and help expand its reach through our donation. By lighting our homes and buildings green, we’re sending a clear message to veterans: you matter, your service is valued and our community stands with you," said Brian Lewis, senior executive director of customer service & programs at Consumers Energy. "As a veteran, I know first-hand how powerful it is to feel seen and supported. This is more than just a symbolic gesture, it’s recognition of those who’ve served."
