Kent County Prosecutor files charges against suspect in 2023 G.R. murder

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Kent County Prosecutor's Office filed multiple charges Thursday against Yasir Lagrone for allegedly firing gunshots at two Grand Rapids Police officers this week.

Formal charges are pending.

The charges include two counts each of assault with intent to murder, resisting & opposing a police officer and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. In addition, one count was filed for carrying a concealed weapon.

The incident occurred near Adams Street and Blaine Avenue. Two officers called out to the 18-year-old suspect, who was standing on the road. Lagrone allegedly fired multiple shots at the two officers, who retired gunfire. No one was hurt.

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom commented about the suspect at a news conference Wednesday.

"I know that they had an officer-safety caution out for him," Winstrom said. "I know that the officers in that neighborhood are familiar with him. I do not exactly know what happened prior to this. But that's all going to come out in the investigation by Michigan State Police."

The two GRPD officers were placed on leave, which is standard policy during officer-involved shootings or shots fired.

"The mission, really, is to protect the young people - especially in this city - from gun violence," Winstrom said.
