HOLLAND, Mich. -- The city of Holland has decided to expand its social district to include the new Holland Ice Park, located at "The Window on the Waterfront." The Holland City Council approved this expansion on Wednesday (November 19) with an 8-1 vote. The change allows visitors to consume alcoholic beverages in the plaza area of the ice park, although drinking on the ice itself is prohibited.

The expansion will officially take effect on December 10, 21 days after the council's vote. Mayor Nathan Bocks explained that while the social district expansion could technically take effect immediately, the ordinance change to allow alcohol in the park requires a 21-day waiting period.

Some residents have raised concerns about safety, especially regarding the combination of alcohol and ice activities. One resident, Jennifer Williams, expressed worries about the increased risk of injury, saying, "Ice plus alcohol equals increased risk of injury and harm for our kids." However, supporters of the expansion, including some local businesses, believe it will boost foot traffic and benefit the local economy.

Councilwoman Kim Rowan stated that the social district has been successful so far and does not expect the expansion to negatively impact the city. "I think there are plenty of examples where the social district has functioned quite lovely in serving families and creating a family atmosphere," she said.
