AAA Michigan has activated its Tow to Go program for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, providing a free towing service to ensure safe travels across the state. The service is available from 6 p.m. today through 6 a.m. on Monday, December 1. It offers a tow and a ride within a 10-mile radius for anyone unable to drive, regardless of AAA membership status.
The program aims to reduce impaired driving during the busy holiday period. According to AAA, a record 2.6 million Michiganders are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home, with most choosing to drive. This increase in traffic heightens the need for safe travel options.
AAA's Tow to Go service has been a part of holiday safety measures for over 25 years, removing nearly 30,000 impaired drivers from roads nationwide. Michigan is one of 11 states offering this service, which also includes states like Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee. Montrae Waiters, a spokeswoman for AAA, emphasized the importance of planning ahead and making responsible choices, such as designating a sober driver or using rideshare services.
While the service is a valuable safety net, it cannot be scheduled in advance and may not be available in some rural areas or during severe weather conditions. Adrienne Woodland from AAA noted that the program is designed as a last-resort option when other safe travel methods fall through.
